My wife and I visited the DR for our third time, and stayed at the Iberostar HD' 12/3-01/07. This is the nicest of the 3 hotels we used in the DR, while the Iberostar in Puerta Plata is comparable, this one is larger and has a slightly better and bigger beach. New Year's eve was fun--real party atmosphere, with great fireworks on the beach.
The food does not taste like it does at home, which is what I expect when I visit another country--food is pretty good at the buffets, and excellent at the specialty restaurants (we dined in the Japanese and the Steakhouse). DR beef is not as tender as US', but everything else is quite good. Make your reservations in the lobby.
Beach and water are verrrry clean; you can see your toes in chest-deep water. You can snorkel right off the beach; swim over by the lighthouse-- 3 or 4 varieties of fish you can feed (take a banana or roll from the buffet). Others varieties on the bottom that you can observe, such as wrasses.
Day trip on Monster Trucks is fun; you get to see what the country is really like. Take a few school supplies, and ask your guide to give them to the kids. Guides speak English, German, and French.
Great place for couples (wink/wink), families; less great for singles looking for a date. No casino. Lobby bar is great place to have a cocktail and cigar--it's open air, so not a smokey atmosphere-- and to meet other folks.
